What Does Good Customer Service Look Like?

Good customer service involves authentically connecting with the customer while also efficiently attending to customer needs.  Being polite, courteous and trained in the company's procedures shows the customer that you are a professional. Making the customer feel valued and having their needs taken care makes for repeat customers, and often word of mouth praise for the company.

Following these guidelines shows your supervisors or managers that you are an asset to their company as well.


  1. Stay Educated: Keeping up to date on company policies, procedures and expectations is of utmost importance in your day to day execution of customer service needs. On going education, including free mini courses, helps you to stay fresh on customer service procedures and modern technologies.
  2. Treat Your Customers Special: How you treat customers is one of the most important elements in customer service. Treat each customer as a unique person for best customer engagement. Even if working with a difficult or upset customer maintaining courtesy, and respect while also satisfying the customers need to the best of your ability will leave a positive effect on the customer.
  3. Admit mistakes: We’ve all, at some point or another have made mistakes. Whether it’s a typo, mispronouncing a customer's name, or entering information incorrectly it is easy to acknowledge this mistake, apologize, and quickly move to correcting the mistake while even letting the customer know the steps you have take to rectify the situation.
  4. Be Thankful. Simply letting the customer know that you appreciate their time and business, makes the customer feel appreciated.


Following these few simple guidelines will not only bring repeat customers to your company or business but also will create positive word of mouth recommendations.
